New Small Groups Starting: Toward "The Plan" - Home

We call our small groups "Spiritual Formation Groups." These are smaller groups of adults committed to meeting weekly in homes for the purpose of helping each other grow in their relationships with God.

Our newest small groups are orienting themselves around intentionally incorporating "The Plan" (Worship, Go, Serve, and Grow) into their life together as a group. This is one of the best ways we can think of to help one another grow toward a life in Christ.

Is it time for you to join one of our new Spiritual Formation Groups? We are now forming groups for our Spring - Summer session.

Please register online to get connected to a group.
Issues of Injustice (Social Justice) - Missional Living

God's heart breaks for those who find themselves as widows, orphans, the poor, the enslaved, and those marginalized in our world. His heart breaks and His eyes turn to see what Christ followers are doing to redeem those afflicted. There are a diversity of these issues; however, we -- as a church -- are intentionally focusing on:

* HIVAIDS Orphans and their plight;

* Marin Homeless Street Community Hamilton Elementary School and in some sense

Missional Living - Missional Living

Missio Dei ...the Mission of God is to redeem through you and me – His Church – a special people for Himself from all the peoples and tribes and tongues and nations of the world. God, the Father, sent His Son, Jesus, for this purpose; He sent His Holy Spirit to empower us and He sends us – the Church – into the world with the message of the gospel of His great love and overwhelming grace for the same purpose. Missional Living ... is a realization that does not segregate global missions from outreach from evangelism from loving our neighbors, but redefines them as integrated, non-exclusive Kingdom endeavors. Living Missionally ... suggests that we - you and me and us gathered as His church - live and reproduce disciples who are learning to see and live like Christ and are sent into the world, as He was, to proclaim in word and deed and power, His Redemptive Love and Grace, thereby living His Kingdom in the world.
Marin Covenant Church is called by God to be more than a church doing missions, she is called to be a missional church -- a body of Jesus followers engaging the world, wherever we are and in whatever capacity we find ourselves, with the love and grace of our Lord.
And we are "... to engage with the spiritually hungry, toward a life in Christ that's inspired, intelligent, and involved."Some other conversations on the subject:

The Alpha Course - Missional Living

The Alpha Course. Alpha is an opportunity for anyone to explore spirituality from a Christian perspective. Relaxed, non-threatening, low-key, and fun, Alpha is a place to ask anything - no question is considered too simple or too hostile. Alpha means a good meal. Alpha is a place where great relationships are formed and bloom. Over ten thought-provoking weekly sessions and a weekend get-away, Alpha guests eat together, listen to a series of talks, and then have small group discussions. Each talk covers a fundamental question, such as: "Who is Jesus?" "Why and How Do I Pray?" and "Does God Heal Today?"

Stacie Mancini serves MCC as our Children’s Ministry Director. In that role, she leads the entire Children’s Ministry staff, ensuring that everything runs smoothly in the Children’s area on Sunday Mornings and during children’s activities. She and her team are responsible for the recruiting and scheduling of volunteers, planning of all children’s curriculum, planning of special events, and oversight of teacher training. Stacie writes, “I count it a privilege to cover you and your children in prayer, and I’m truly happy to see each of you smiling on Sunday morning.” Stacie and her husband Chris (married to since 1996) have three beautiful children: Lucas (8 year old free-style Lego engineer, determined to be a MLB pitcher or the first astronaut to Mars), Esther (5 year old fashion diva who is exceptionally sweet and full of spunk) and Beatrice (2 year old beam of sunshine). They also have two yellow lab puppies, Ruby and Henry, who are slowly eating them out of furniture and home. Stacie’s parents, John and Anna Paraskos, and her sister, Angie Bazalgette and her 4 children also attend MCC. Some Interesting “Stacie Stuff”: Some Things Stacy Enjoys: playing with her kids, running, reading, hiking, travel, gardening, painting, watching movies, crossword and soduku puzzles, people...especially little people. Some Things That Inspire Stacie: art, writing, music Some of Stacie's Favorite Words:
Our birth is but a sleep and a forgetting:
The soul that rises with us, our life's Star,
  Hath had elsewhere its setting,
  And cometh from afar:
  Not in entire forgetfulness,
  and not in utter nakedness,
But trailing clouds of glory do we come
From God, who is our home:
Heaven lies about us in our infancy! --William Wordsworth Some of Stacie's Least Favorite Words: From daughter Beatrice, usually during church, "Can I have a jelly bean? A pink one!" Education: B.A. in Chemistry, U.C.S.D. Studies in Art and Art History in Florence, Italy after graduation.

  Lead a Child to Christ

      A - Admit to God you're a sinner

      Everyone has done
things to make God unhappy. God tells us that sin is not allowed in
heaven. So you have to do something to get rid of your sin.
Read Romans 3:23 & Revelation 21:27

      B - Believe in God,
Jesus, & the Bible

      Jesus died on the
cross. He died so we wouldn't have to be punished for the wrong things
that we've done. Imagine that he hung there on the cross, bleeding, so
you and I could live with God forever.
Read 1 Peter 2:24, Colossians 1:14 & Acts
16:31

      C - Choose to
follow Jesus

      Tell God that
you're sorry for the wrong things that you've done. Tell God that you
believe in Jesus. Tell God that you want to be more like Jesus and
spend time with God forever. Tell God that you want Jesus to live in
your heart forever.
Read Luke 8:13 & Romans 10:13

When you do this (and mean it) then you have asked Jesus into your
heart and you are forgiven (saved) for all the things you have done
wrong and all the things that you will do wrong.

Pray: "Dear God, Thank you for making
a way for us to turn from the wrong things that we have done. I know I
have done wrong things, but right now I want to look upon Jesus so that
you will forgive me for the things I have done. Please let Jesus come
into my heart, to live forever there. I want to live forever with God.
Thank you for loving me. In Jesus' Name I Pray, Amen."

Now its time to have a party! All the angels in heaven are dancing with
Jesus because you have made the most important decision of your life…To
Follow Jesus.

While following Jesus isn't an exact science, we are convinced that people move forward spiritually because they intentionally engage in each of four kinds of opportunities. So at Marin Covenant Church, we encourage everyone to worship, serve, grow and go!

... is for every one of us to be engaged in one opportunity in each area. Click on each of the four areas below for more information about how you can get involved:

The Alpha Course - The Alpha Course

What is the point of life? What happens when we die?Is forgiveness possible? What relevance does Jesus have for our lives today? What is Alpha? The Alpha course is an opportunity for anyone to explore spirituality from a Christian perspective. Relaxed, non-threatening, low-key, and fun, Alpha is a place to ask anything – no question is considered too simple or too hostile.

What’s involved? Over ten thought-provoking weekly sessions and a weekend get-away, Alpha guests share meals, listen to a series of talks, and then have small group discussions. Each talk covers a fundamental question, such as: “Who is Jesus?” “Why and How Do I Pray?” and “Does God Heal Today?” Who runs the Alpha course? More than 7 million people have completed the Alpha course. Over 31,000 Alpha courses are running worldwide in 54 countries, over 7,700 Alpha courses in the US alone, 4 of which are in Marin County. Courses are being run in homes, schools, universities, seminaries, military bases and onboard ships, prisons, in churches, pubs, and restaurants. Is it for you? Everyone is welcome on an Alpha course! Some want to investigate whether God exists and if there is any point to life; others are concerned about what happens after death. Others may have attended church, but feel they have never really understood the basics of the Christian faith. Guests come from many different backgrounds, many different spiritual and faith journeys, and hold many different viewpoints, but most come with the same basic objective: to establish whether God and Jesus Christ have any real relevance for their lives. So, in a word, yes! Is it for your family, neighbors, friends?
Indeed, it is! What will it cost? The Alpha course is free. Guests are encouraged to share in the cost of the meals and in their share of the weekend away; however, if you want to come, do not let finances keep you from joining us. How do I find out more? Call us at anytime: 415-479-1360 Email us: alpha@marincovenant.org Ask anyone wearing an "Ask me about Alpha" button at church Visit the official alpha website: www.alphausa.org When is the next Alpha Course? The Alpha Party starts the course: Wednesday, April 15th, 20096pm - 8:30pm with ChildCare Marin Covenant Church at 195 N. Redwood Dr., San Rafael, CA 94903 To REGISTER Join us with a friend, neighbor, family member, school or workmate.

Welcome! We trust that whether you are a long-time participant in our community, just getting started, or simply here checking things out, you’ll sense the warm welcome we mean to extend and the love we experience in Jesus. We make no claims to be the “perfect church” and can even guarantee that we’ll make mistakes. But we’re trying to be real – attempting to seek God without pretense. If that sounds like a pursuit worthy of your time too, then please join us. We’ll do everything we can to be faithful friends and pray that the kindness, sincerity, and merciful candor of Jesus will be experienced by you here.--Art Greco, Lead Pastor

Men's Ministries at MCC - Men

We are sold on the idea that the best way to help guys grow is for them to be together with other guys. We have multiple opportunities through which we can enter intentional, adventurous, life-giving experiences with other men, including:
+ Men's Fraternity (New Small groups)
Men's Fraternity is a series of three studies, beginning with The Quest for Authentic Manhood, followed by Authentic Manhood: Winning at Work and Home, and concluding with The Great Adventure series. We have currently just finished Winning at Work and Home and will begin The Great Adventure in September. In the meantime, we are forming Small Groups for Men that will meet weekly for ongoing challenge, support, and accountability. We begin in March, so take the time now to register online and get connected with some guys! Feel free to contact Pastor Jeff if you have any unanswered questions.

+Third Saturday Men's Breakfast Each month, a different guy challenges us by telling us part of his story and what is going on in his journey with God. We also get to hang out, eat a huge breakfast, and laugh together. We meet the third Saturday of every month from 7:30 - 9 AM. So that we can plan food, email your intention to attend to Alan Edmondson, or call him at 457-1865..

+ Weekly Morning Bible Study: San Rafael
An hour of sharing, prayer requests, and Bible study. A great way to start the day, and to make sure you dig into the Word at least once a week! West End Café, 1131 Fourth Street (across from Rafael Theater) San Rafael. 6:30 - 7:30 AM Thursdays. Just show up!

+ Weekly Morning Bible Study and Breakfast: Novato
Bible study and fellowship. Build the Bible study habit. The Star Restaurant, 1700 Novato Blvd. 7:30 - 8:30 AM Fridays. Jerry Fountain, 897-0422 or Al Hall 892-2255 for more info.
+ San Quentin and Champions for Life prison ministry. Marin County jail Bible study. Bring the gospel to men stung by the new reality of being behind bars. Call Mike Bonnel (892-9285) about San Quentin. We also join with the Champions for Life, (aka Bill Glass Ministries): contact Jerry Fountain for info. Bring the Word to the Marin County Jail Bible study: Rene Tovar (897-2141). + Promise Keepers Dedicated to introducing men to Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord; and then helping them to grow as Christians. This is mainly accomplished through Promise Keepers’ Seven Promises and the men's conference ministry. Millions of men have participated since 1990 when PK began. 1-866-PROMISE or www.promisekeepers.org. + Day-Hiking, Skeet shooting, Boating, Bowling, Fishing, White-Water Rafting, Backpacking and Camping We have a variety of activities and are always open for more. Let Jeff Mazzariello know what you like to do: all these are being considered for 2008-2009. + If you don’t see what you’re looking for here, then start it! Let Jeff Mazzariello know so it can be publicized.

Adult Ministries - All Adults

Knowing that people need tailored input to nurture them spiritually, we provide varying venues for spiritual enrichment. Each opportunity is presented with the hope it will advance a person’s maturity in Christ while strengthening his or her relationships with others. On Sunday mornings, in addition to our Worship Gatherings, we have adult classes we call Sunday Formation Electives. Several classes/series are offered each week and the topics are listed in the Sunday morning bulletin. Each elective welcomes visitors and "first-timers" each week.
During the week we have many small groups that we call Spiritual Formation Groups or SFG's. These are groups that are comprised of six to twelve people, married or single, who meet in homes throughout the county. Each group meets weekly for prayer, Bible study, reflection, friendship, encouragement, fun, food, etc.
Some of our small groups are orienting themselves around intentionally incorporating "The Plan" (Worship, Serve, Go and Grow) into their life together as a group. To sign up for one or request more information, you can go directly to an online registration form.We have several Men's Ministry and Women's Ministry opportunities. For more information call or email Pastor Jeff

Dear Marin Covenant Family:

This is a short family business update regarding our financial health since we last reported to you at the June 8th business meeting. At that time we were able to rejoice together in a 12 month period that saw us pay off the church mortgage, build our capital reserves and move forward considerably in the ministry we are called to in this community. However, shortly after that meeting the general economy took a serious turn downward and like everyone else, the current financial turmoil is impacting Marin Covenant Church. While the news is challenging, please read on because it is also an opportunity to demonstrate a life that’s truly different in a way that’s only possible during times of stress and trial.

First, let’s get the best set of facts before you that we can. Our budget for the 2008-2009 year was approximately $1.5M, of which we expected revenues of $1.3M from regular giving (a 20% increase over actual giving from the previous year), $125K from RNPI office building dividends, and $100K from special event fundraisers and fees. Over the first quarter, we are 30 % below our needed regular giving (14% lower than the same quarter last year) and the RNPI board has reduced forecast dividends by 35%.

While this sounds drastic, we are experiencing much the same challenge as other churches throughout the country and Marin county. In fact, we are in a better position than most as we began the year with nearly $600K in unrestricted cash reserves that we did not include in our operating expense plan because the sources were one-time gifts and dividends that we did not want to depend on. The Leadership Team has amended the 2008-2009 spending plan, making hard cuts early that will impact ministry, but so far we are able to meet payroll and keep our staff intact. This plan will keep us solvent under our best projections for at least 18 months. However, the adjustments mean we will need to use monies we had hoped could be directed at capital improvements to fund ministries instead. But we believe that investing in keeping our ministry team solid throughout the coming months is a more important investment in our ministry priorities.

Let me close with a couple of thoughts about MCC’s ministry in the midst of these challenges. First, we have a great opportunity to be a place of refuge and care in hard times. We have church family hurting and it may even get worse. We may have the opportunity to come alongside other congregations, some of which are already looking to us for advice and/or input. And in the larger community, we may have opportunities to bless the unchurched and lost who have had their sense of stability and self sufficiency shaken.

In order to take advantage of these opportunities we need 2 things: First, to those that are able, your sacrificial financial contributions now will provide a return on investment unmatched anywhere – lives touched for eternity.. Ask yourself, where can I best invest my finances today? Second, and as important, we have built tremendous momentum in our ministry to “Go Out" and "Go Deep.” While increasing our financial investment in that momentum right away seems unlikely, we have great opportunity to grow our lay ministry to engage the spiritually hungry in ways that money could never buy. Again, ask yourself, where can I best invest my time and energy today?

Finally, we have often recounted the story of Gideon’s 300 and their impact for the people of God, but another faith hero of old that we love is Hezekiah as told in 2 Chron 32. After turning the people of Judah back to God, Hezekiah “sought his God and worked wholeheartedly..” Nevertheless, he found himself surrounded by the mighty king of Assyria and all his armies. Then, after taking what responsible action he could to fortify the cities, Hezekiah encouraged the people, reminding them to “Be strong and courageous. With him is the arm of flesh, but with us is the Lord our God to help and to fight our battles.” And as the attack became imminent, “King Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah cried out in prayer to heaven”.. And God sent an angel who annihilated the enemy. There has been a growing movement of prayer in our midst and we have some exciting choices to make. Will we get down on our knees and cry out to God for His people in prayer? Will we stand and see God work instead of frantically trying to solve our problems in spite of Him? Will we have faith that we serve the God of the universe who can do far beyond what we can imagine? Will we be satisfied with our daily bread and not worry how full our barns are? Please pray fervently with us.

Regardless of whether you are new to the faith, have just started walking toward Christ with our family or are one of the many faithful who have been committed to being a Jesus follower in this Body, you will make a difference. More than ever, we need the entire Body building itself up in love as each part does its work.

Are these times and conditions challenging? Of course they are. But if we'll let them be, they will also be exciting too. For when great faith is required, great people step up in ways they've never stepped up before. This is one of those times ... for you and for your church. We're both confident that on the other side of this challenge, some of our greatest days together are waiting for us.

Serving together,

Art Greco, Lead Pastor

Picture Directory Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - Photo Directory FAQ

Why do I need to sign up for a time slot? We anticipate being able to photograph a certain number of people within a certain time. If we have extra time, we’ll be happy to take drop-in photos. We’re only planning to take photos for 3 Sundays. We respect your time, so please prevent long lines by signing up to reserve your time slot. Who should get a picture taken? We are taking pictures of everyone who considers Marin Covenant to be their church home. Does my whole family need to be here for the photo? Yes. We only have space for one family photo per family, so we need you all in the same shot. We also need to take a photo of each individual. These can be taken separately if needed. What if we have children in college or our whole family isn’t here? FIRST-Get a family picture taken as you are, then email directory@marincovenant.org to make an appointment to re-take the picture when you are all together. Can I purchase prints of my pictures? Photos are being taken primarily for the directory. Since we’re not using a professional photography service, we will not be making professional prints available. If you’d like, you may email directory@marincovenant.org and request that the digital file be emailed to you. Then you may have prints made from that file. There will be no charge for the file, which can be used freely. What should I wear? It’s best to come as you normally do, no need for fancy clothes or hair. We’ll be using a solid background, and we will not do any re-touching. Shots will be from the waist or chest up. When/How will I get a directory? We’re hoping to make the printed directory available by the first of the year that will include all photos taken by Nov. 2. This is a non-funded initiative, so we will request a small fee to cover printing. Keep in mind that the directory will be available to view online free with photos and contact information updated regularly. How will photos be used? As with all directory information, they are to be used for church purposes only. Mainly for the online and printed directories, and possibly directories of on-site ministries. NOT for any public distribution. When you have your picture taken, you will also tell us with whom your information can be shared: With anyone who considers Marin Covenant their home and has access to a directory ORWith church pastors, staff AND people who are in groups with you ORWith only church pastors and staff What if our family photo changes significantly? We plan to offer a few opportunities each year to update a family photo that has significant changes (like a new baby) or to add photos of people new to Marin Covenant.

At Marin Covenant Church, we offer worship experiences at three different times, with two distinct voices. The same message is heard in each gathering. Our 8:00am gathering utilizes a more classic musical style, often led by piano and featuring one of our choirs. Our 9:30am and 11:00am gatherings offers an intense post-contemporary music worship experience. The sacrament of Communion is offered the first Sunday of the month in our morning gatherings. Children's activities are available during all three gatherings, and there are Junior High and Senior High student groups during the 11:00am gathering. Various Adult Spiritual Formation Electives meet at 9:30am and 11:00am. There are also opportunities to get connected throughout the week, including Alpha, Men's and Women's ministries, and in our many Spiritual Formation groups.
What a Celebration! - 40th Anniversary

What a joyful weekend! Friends came all the way from Massachusetts, Minnesota and Singapore to help us celebrate MCC turning forty! Just about four hundred folks filled our facilities on Saturday. There was singing, hugging, much eating and a few tears. The fun continued on Sunday when we returned to Miller Creek School and filled the gym with happy folks. Gary Copeland, our founding pastor, gave the message. There was more singing, hugging, and rejoicing!

As the chairman of this event, it was my delight to be thanked by so many people. But I didn't do this alone. I would like to take a moment to thank the committee: Al & Jan Wade, Dick & Karla Mahar, Bruce & Ruth Schiller, Anke Betic, Carol Werschky, and John and Anna Paraskos. They were terrific! And further, I'd like to thank all of you, our MCC family. You made the potluck dishes, you set up chairs, you took down chairs, you practiced in the choirs, you set tables, you worked the kitchen, you helped with all the details when asked. Our 40th was a celebration to remember because we did it as a family.

My deepest thanks,

Peggy Bonette - Our Staff Team

Peggy Bonette is MCC’s Office Manager, having joined the staff team in April of 1990. Peggy assists with administrative support to the staff and leadership team members. One of her primary duties as Office Manager is working with and assisting the Controller by overseeing the church’s financials and financial record-keeping. But if you ask any of the rest of the staff, they would just say that Peggy “makes the place run smoothly.” Peggy lives in San Rafael. She has three married daughters (two living in the Bay Area and one in Southern California) and eight fantastic grandchildren. In fact, when she’s not working in the office, Peggy is usually spending time planning her next opportunity to see them. She’s been the office administrator at MCC under the leadership of three of the Church’s four Lead Pastors. Before that, Peggy held positions that included work in a Berkeley law office, service on a team of accountants, and personal secretary for the Personnel Director of an insurance company. Some Interesting Peggy Stuff: She is the proud (and overly indulgent) owner of Jacques, a frisky Bichon Frise (that’s a small, white-haired dog with pink ribbons placed everywhere). Peggy loves to sew. In fact, she says that she finds it to be “very relaxing” - especially when making crafty things for her girls. Cooking also makes Peggy’s list of favorite things. Her table is often overfull on holidays and her kitchen is busy just about any time she has a chance to entertain. Peggy may be quite and dignified, but she screams and giggles like a high school cheerleader when she rides in a convertible that is going fast. It’s really something to experience! Peggy hates the fact that deer get into her yard and eat here flowers but is too nice to bring herself to do anything about it. Peggy’s Favorite Phrase: “Hi Grammy!” Peggy’s Least Favorite Phrase: “Jacques! Get away. That’s not a cat; it’s a skunk!” Education: Two years of study at a Berkley business college.

Exchange Opportunities - Exchange Opportunities

Hello
Marin Covenant Members,

My name is Susan Grantano, Regional Director of Face the World
Foundation. Face the World Foundation is a non-profit organization
based in Novato. Our purpose is to find loving American families to
host our International Exchange Students. Since 1980, we have promoted
global learning and exchange by offering opportunities for
international high school students (15-18 years old) to experience life
in the US and become part of an "American family". The goal of our
exchange program is to provide students, host families, schools and
communities with a quality experience that will not only enhance
personal growth, but also will establish lasting friendships.

My personal goal is to find families that will open their heart and
home to one of these students. I was blessed to meet Jeff while
spreading our mission through a neighborhood close to our home office.
After explaining our mission, Jeff invited me to visit Marin Covenant
this past Sunday to meet the members and provide you with this
opportunity. It was a wonderful experience to share in the morning
classes and attend your Worship. With each smiling face and "welcome" I
received from the members, I knew in my heart that you, the members,
are exactly the type of families that I am looking for.

With that being said, I invite you share your love and faith by hosting
an exchange student. I will work closely with your family to match a
student that shares similar interests and hobbies. Do your children
speak a language? I will work with you to find a student that speaks
that language. Are you a soccer family? We have several students eager
to play soccer (and many other sports) here in the US. Are you
musicians? Artists? Technology buffs? Well...you get the idea.

Our students are eagerly waiting to find out who their American family
